The Legal Process

Adoption and guardianship are offered in order to allow a person the right to care for, and make legal decisions for, someone he or she loves.

  • Adoption: Grandparent adoption and stepparent adoption are the most common requests we handle. The most complicated aspect of these cases is the termination of parental rights. If the parent is reluctant to give up these rights, we are able to handle the dispute.
  • Guardianship: Legal guardianship is available for minors or adults with special needs. When a minor is involved, it is also referred to as custodianship or conservatorship. Unlike adoption, parental rights don't need to be terminated to obtain guardianship, but the guardian still gets all of the legal rights that a parent would have. This process is handled through probate court.
